A New Moon Rises Exhibition at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum

A Review and Critique of the New Moon Rises Exhibition at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum

The New Moon Rises exhibit presented in an online format through the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum is fascinating, to me at least. In this exhibit, the Smithsonian has passages about lunar exploration and accompanying stimuli to look at. The website talks about relatively recent missions to the moon, such as the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (2009), and includes information about the older Apollo missions and what their scientific goals were. It includes images of the moon and information about how they were made, and what they include.

Although I, personally, enjoyed reading through this exhibit, I know that my perspective is incredibly biased. Space is a thing that I find fascinating and thus reading the passages included in this exhibit were interesting to me, while it may not capture other people's imagination as it does mine. If one is interested in space, I would immediately recommend them to check out the National Air & Space Museum and this exhibit in the Smithsonian, but if not, I would advise them to check it out but not feel obligated to read that whole thing.

I enjoyed how the information provided in this exhibition was very easy to digest, while also being informative. Also, it included photos that enhanced the viewing experience. On the other hand, it's a little saddening to not be able to experience the museum in person. I've been to other aerospace museums before, and one of the best parts is being able to physically see the scale and magnitude of the machines made to enable events, such as the moon landing. It would be nice if more photos that included the physical objects used for these missions were included, helping the viewer to get a better sense of scale and magnitude.Launch of LROC
