A Critique of Ferris Bueller's Day Off

A Critique of Ferris Bueller's Day Off

By: Carson McNeill

Ferris Bueller's Day Off is a phenomenal story that celebrates the pure joy of childhood and the desire for freedom that is oppressed by our very own institutions. This movie follows a high school senior named Ferris Bueller as he attempts to get away with skipping school while having the best day possible. Joining him are his uptight best friend Cameron and his girlfriend, Sloane.

This film teaches the viewer to slow down and enjoy life before it's too late, which is a lifestyle expressed by the free-spirited Ferris. On the other hand, Cameron shows what happens if someone refuses to enjoy their life and allows themselves to get pushed around. This idea is further expressed through Ed Rooney, the principal of Ferris's high school. While Ferris is out having a good day the principal sets off on a crusade to catch Ferris and effectively ruin his life. The principal seems to be a miserable person and instead of trying to improve himself, he blames Ferris for all his problems, showing how refusing to enjoy life can lead someone to become a pathetic shell of a man.

Although this movie was released in 1986, the themes and ideas presented by it barely feel dated. The plot of the movie is still a dream for any student, keeping it fresh even 35 years later. If one has the chance to watch this film, I would highly recommend it, especially if they are a student or feeling trapped by life.
