The Natural History Museum in London - Nicole and Mei

In our search of many Natural History Museums, we decided to focus on the National History Museum in London (NHML). This museum intrigued us becuase of the versatility and diversity of activities and exhibitions present. When you first enter the museum you are greeted with an open floor plan with individual arches housing each artifact. Some examples of these artifacts are a skeleton of a giraffe, a preserved marlin, a chunk of coral, different types of rocks, and a huge ice age mammoth. After viewing the interior of the museum we got reminded of a movie we had watched a couple years back. After a little research we figured out that in fact it was the museum where Paddington was filmed.

Another fascinating aspect of the museum was the interactive 3D virtual tour. Using this allowed us to stay in the comfort of our own home and experience the wonders of the museum. As we took the virtual tour we found the Hummingbird Exhibit astonishing because it showed the true minuscule size of these birds.

There is a section of the museum where we can see ginormous mammals, the mastodons. We see elephants, mammoths, and other ice age era species. These sculptures/preservations help learn more about these creatures since they have been extinct for a while. Another part of the museum that we enjoyed was the eternal resources provided in the website. These resource allow you to continue your research outside of the museum, especially in these epochal times of COVID-19.

  3. Wow! Very deep-dive into this museum. I really enjoyed how you described that the virtual exhibition was able to resent you with a realistic experience. With that, the description of "minuscule size of" hummingbirds truly shows how this skillful artist used time and effort to complete this project. The exhibition of giraffe skeletons is also amazing for its enormous size always shocks people. Thank you for the information!
