Invalid Handing a Petition to Napoleon at the Parade in the Court of the Tuileries Palace-Jiaming Chen

This artwork from the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg depicts the French Artist Vernet Horace's view on a French military parade during the Napoleon Era. The painting is very detailed, the rifles and flags of each soldier and the windows of each building can be seen clearly. Furthermore, the face of each character in the painting can be seen as well and they all show different emotions. Some looked worried while others look thoughtful. The dog on the right handed corner is especially noteworthy, it stands out in the character as the only animal that is independent in the picture. The other animals; the horses, have masters who rides on them. This irrelevant dog, in the middle of the military parade, shows irony as the parade prohibits the entering of non-associated individuals while allowing a random dog to be present. All in all, the painting is extremely detailed and that is what makes it a noteworthy and interesting.

  1. Wow, i did not notice the random presence of the dog there! The analyses of the clear details and small existences (the flags and the dog) are very fascinating because these small details truly demonstrate the mastery of the artist and the wonder of the the painting world.

  2. I thoroughly enjoyed your depiction of the painting. Mei and I would've added the analyzation of the clouds above Napoleon's Army. As you can see in the painting, the left side of the clouds is brighter and has the connotation of a more positive atmosphere. While on the right side, the clouds are darker and gloomier which gives a more negative connotation. This could represent the fight between good and evil, light and dark. Going into depth about the dog was a smart choice.

  3. This piece is truly incredible. The amount of detail that the artist put into creating the entire army under Napoleon must have taken a great amount of time! I enjoyed your explanation of the dog in the rightmost corner as a symbol for those who were not affiliated with the French military!

  4. Another thing I think that is interesting about this photo is how Napoleon is highlighted from the rest by being on a pure white horse, and in the sunlight, almost as if he is bringing light to the French Army. I also appreciate your analysis about the dog. It's almost as if all the soldiers are being controlled as well and the only free beings are Napoleon himself and the dog.

  5. The image you chose is very detailed and has a deep background behind it. You did a really good job encompassing the entire beauty of the image. Also, you pointed out a dog, which I otherwise wouldn't have noticed, showing your ability to fully critique the image in detail.

  7. The analysis of the dog was an interesting decision. I would also note

    1. the scaffolding in the background on the right, indicating construction or perhaps reconstruction after the violence of the Reign of Terror or the Napoleonic Wars.
    2. the two small children in the center foreground, dressed in military/formal attire similar to their guardian, being raised with ideas of nationalism or pride in France
